Science and Technology Building
Kent State University, Trumbull Campus, Warren, OhioThe Project consisted of the conversion of an existing physical education building into a facility which houses offices, labs, classrooms, and other training areas for The State of Ohio. The Project included additions of 50,000 square feet and the renovation of approximately 25,000 square feet of existing space. Notable construction features include a two story rotunda, the addition of a partial second floor at the existing physical education building, a triangular shaped two-story addition with a sloped roof, and a curved glass and metal wall panel system.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of a structural steel frame which is in-filled with masonry or covered by a glass and metal wall panel system. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all trades except plumbing, HVAC, electrical and fire protection.
Lyden House
Youngstown State UniversityThe Project consists of a 64,284 square foot, four-story structure that houses beds for 300 students and six resident advisors, areas for study and lounging and shower/toilet facilities.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
Structural steel, masonry, wood truss and shingle roof system. Mike Coats Construction Co., Inc performed General Trades for this project.
College of Education Building
Youngstown State University, Youngstown, OhioThis project for the State of Ohio included the construction of a 92,357 square foot facility to house the College of Education. The facility consists of a four-story main building and a one-story auditorium. The main building includes offices, classrooms, labs, a library and a four-story atrium. Both the main building and the auditorium are triangular shaped.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of spread footings on controlled fill with a structural steel frame, concrete floors on metal deck, and masonry. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc., was responsible for all trades except landscaping, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and fire protection.

Kent State University, Trumbull Campus, Warren, OhioThe Project included the construction of a new two-story, 32,500 square foot, 46' high building. The building includes offices, labs and training areas. Notable construction features include curved exterior walls constructed of structural steel and masonry, a sloped roof, and a unique metal wall panel system.

Youngstown State University, Youngstown, OhioThe Project consisted of 8,000 square foot, two-story structure that displays faculty, student, and traveling art shows. The building includes a skylighted gallery, a double-height installation gallery, an auditorium, and related offices.

930-974 North Street Extension, Meadville, PennsylvaniaThe Project included new construction of 124,552 square feet, and the renovation of approximately 125,000 square feet of existing space. New construction added classrooms, two gymnasiums, a library, a commons area, a cafeteria and various staff offices.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of structural steel and masonry. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. performed the "General Construction" contract. This contract included demolition, earthwork, cast-in-place concrete, masonry, metals, carpentry, doors, specialties and conveying systems.

Forum Health Medical Education Building
Youngstown, OhioThe Project included a 38,000 square foot, four-story structure including a four-story atrium and houses conference rooms and medical offices.

The TMH Center for Imaging
2580 Elm Road, Cortland, OhioThis Project for Trumbull Memorial Hospital included the construction of a 20,220 square foot, one-story facility to house a M.R.I. Room, a R/F Room, a CT Scan Room, a RAD Room, and related office and patient space. A connector linked the new facility to the existing TMH Center for Surgery. The Project also included an exterior plaza and parking.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of load bearing metal studs with masonry veneer. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all construction trades.
Professional Building and Kidney Dialysis Center
Professional Building, 1340 Belmont Avenue, Youngstown, OhioThe Project included new construction of 26,500 square feet and the renovation of space within the existing structure. New construction added dialysis treatment rooms, examination rooms, a training room, a guardhouse and various staff offices.

Surgical Intensive Care Facility and Materials Handling Center
HM Health Services, Youngstown, OhioPhase 1 - A 44,000 square foot, two-story, below-grade structure houses prep and clean work rooms, sterilization areas, distribution stores, sterile stores, receiving and decontamination, cart holding and staging, mechanical and electrical rooms, and related areas.
Phase II - A 44,000 square foot, two-story structure constructed atop Phase 1 houses twelve surgical intensive care units, ten coronary surgical care units and related offices.

Ambulatory Surgical Center
The project included the construction of a 72,000 square foot, three-story structure which contains eight operating rooms, related recovery rooms, lobbies, and offices.

The structural system is comprised of structural steel and masonry, and an EPDM roof system. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all trades. Architect: Hanahan/Strollo & Associates, Inc.
The Manor Assisted Living Facility
2567 Niles-Vienna Road, Niles, OhioThe Project included the construction of a 33,330 square foot, two-story assisted living facility. The facility includes 50 apartments, three dining areas, commercial kitchen and laundry facilities, a salon, various multi-purpose rooms, staff offices and other common areas.

The structural system consists of wood framing with siding and masonry veneer, and wood roof trusses with shingles. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all construction trades.

Expressway Travel Center
130 Pleasant Drive, Aliquippa, PennsylvaniaThe Project included the construction of an 80,000 square foot public transit storage, operations and maintenance facility for Beaver County Transit Authority. The facility includes a two-story operations building which houses offices and a customer service area, and an attached one-story building which provides space for fleet storage and maintenance. The fleet storage and maintenance building includes a bus wash, an automatic fueling system and three buss lift systems. Also included construction of a 200 car parking lot. Notable construction features included curved roofs at the customer service area and the canopy, and a two-story screenwall which separates the operations building from public spaces.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of masonry on spread footings with a membrane roofing system on steel joists and steel deck. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all construction trades except HVAC, electrical and plumbing.
Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County
The project included the construction of a 28,722 square foot, three-level addition which contains open stack areas, general circulation areas and offices.

The structural system consists of structural steel and masonry back-up with limestone veneer. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. performed general trades on this project.
United States Postal Service Distribution Center
Akron, OhioThis design-build project included the construction of an 80,000 square foot, two-story addition to the existing processing and distribution center. The addition includes a 45,000 square foot work area over an on-grade 80 car parking garage.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The walls and foundations of the on-grade parking garage and the floor of the second level work area are constructed of formed concrete. The floor of the on-grade parking garage is constructed of cast-in-place concrete. The walls of the second level work area are masonry and the roof over this same area consists of a membrane roofing system on steel joints and steel deck. The Project utilized the design-build method of project delivery. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for all design and construction associated with the Project.

The Bridge Connector - A 500 linear foot, one-story, elevated structure connects the main hospital, parking deck, ambulatory surgical center, and dental clinic.

Parking Deck - Caissons; cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete; and face brick veneer at exterior elevations.

Youngstown Center for Industry & Labor
Youngstown, OhioThe Ohio Historical Society and Youngstown State University chose Mike Coates Construction Company, Inc. to build this 32,000 square foot, three-story structure. It includes exhibition areas, classrooms, archives, and a library.

Quintuple Effect Salt Evaporator Facility
RMI Company, Ashtabula, OhioA 40 foot wide by 140 foot by 120 foot high structure houses a five-stage salt evaporator, integral to the production of titanium sponge. The location of the facility, between two buildings of an operating sodium chlorine plant, created a hazardous working environment. The project also included the construction of an elevated bridge to carry brine, liquid sodium, and high voltage electrical, telephone, and computer services to the evaporator facility.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
Cast-in-place concrete building foundations, extensive cast-in-place concrete equipment foundations, structural steel with metal siding, standing seam metal roof system. Mike Coates performed all trades for this project. Contract Method: Fast-Track, Time and Material

RMI Melt Shop Facility
RMI Company, Niles, OhioThis 20,800 square foot, fifty five foot high structure houses two dual-station vacuum arc furnaces, a thirty five tone crane, offices, and a pulpit. The project also included the construction of a sewage treatment plant and an elevated bridge to carry high voltage electrical, computer and telephone services to the melt shop facility.

Ohio Administrative Maximum Security Prison Complex Phase IV - Youngstown, Ohio
Youngstown, OhioThe Project included the construction of the prison building, a five-story, 338,000 square foot structure which consists of a core area and two pods. The building includes more than 500 prison cells, a vehicular sallyport, commercial kitchen and laundry facilities, medical facilities and related equipment, staff offices and space for various support personnel.
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:
The structural system consists of structural steel with masonry in the core areas, and masonry on pre-cast concrete at the pods. Security walls were constructed of masonry grouted solid with both vertical and horizontal steel reinforcing. Mike Coates Construction Co., Inc. performed the "General" contract. This contract included cast-in-place concrete, masonry, metals, carpentry, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, specialties, equipment and conveying systems.
Mahoning County Justice Center
Youngstown, OhioThe Mahoning County Justice Center in Youngstown, Ohio, build for the Mahoning County, Ohio is an eight-story, 198,000-square-foot structure that houses 446 inmate cells, staff facilities, a 911 emergency center, sheriff's administrative offices, and areas for kitchen, laundry, recreation and medical/dental care.
Mike, Jr. says the justice center, which took a year and a half to complete, was a major achievement due to the fact that it is located downtown and has a lot of tight spaces. He says Coates was the only local contractor competing on the job. "It moved us a tier up," he says.
